This workshop introduces participants to the concept of trauma and resilience and allows them to explore their own experiences to provide a better sense of relatability. Learning these key principles can enhance wellbeing and is applicable to everyone. The process of learning can never occur without developing meaningful relationships. During the workshop, participants have the opportunity to learn more about themselves and the students they serve by assessing and understanding their own underlying trauma and vulnerabilities with a series of intentional activities and exercises. By evaluating and analyzing our own adverse childhood experiences, we are able to better empathize with those around us. By breaking down the wall between us and the individuals we work with, we can help them overcome barriers that may be standing in the way of them reaching their full potential. Recognizing this allows for better relationships, increased cognition, and enhanced learning transfer. Participants will be surprised by what they learn about themselves and, therefore, want to play an integral role in promoting resilience and advocating for trauma-informed practices within their organizations on the teaching side, as well as on the learning side.

Melissa Mann, Dean of Career and Technical Education at Danville Community College, is a lifelong, passionate educator who has worked at day cares, preschools, K-12 (both public and private), community colleges, and universities. Mrs. Mann is a product of the Virginia Community College System, having received an early childhood education certificate while in the 11th grade, an AAS degree in administrative support technology, and an AA&S degree in general studies. Upon completion of these programs, she transferred to Old Dominion University and earned a BS in occupational and technical education with an emphasis in IT. She then went on to complete her graduate studies earning a MA in business management and leadership from Liberty University. Dean Mann sits on the executive board of many organizations and multiple committees including: North Carolina American Council on Education Women’s Network, Caswell Council for the Arts, North Carolina Campus Compact Advisory Council, Carolina Cyber Network, Diversity & Global Awareness Committee, FFA – Caswell Chapter, and North Carolina Organization for Student Success. Working with students has always been her passion, and her philosophy is positive relationships must exist in order for learning to occur.
Dean Mann is a native of Southside Virginia and resides there with her husband, Rick, who is the Director of Living Benefits for Invida Financial Network. Together, they have five children, two grandchildren, and four dogs. When they are not spending time with their family, they are out volunteering in the community, dabbling in their musical talents, or relaxing by the lake. They enjoy traveling and are always on the hunt for their next adventure!
Cancellation and Refund Policy
Cancellation and refund requests, minus a $25 administrative fee, must be received in by November 17, 2023. Refunds will not be given for no-shows. Substitutions are accepted at any time prior to the workshop by submitting a written request to Kelley Berley. The individual requesting the transfer is responsible for all financial obligations (any balance due) associated with the transfer.
