Identifying and Using Community Resources to Connect and Support Students

Students are often tasked with navigating their work/life balance without fully realizing the community resources that are available to assist them. Faculty and staff are on the front line to assist and identify students who have greater needs as they navigate their pathways to success. Unfortunately for some students, their needs extend far beyond the help of classroom assistance. Often, faculty and staff do not know about the community resources that can assist students along their journey. Participants in this workshop walk away with an understanding of the key resources available to assist their students.

By the end of this workshop, participants know or will be able to:

• Identify resources at their institution and within the community to assist students with specific issues.
• Create a quick resource guide to share with students that presents specific barriers to completion (such as food insecurity, housing insecurity, financial barriers, mental health, transportation, childcare, and substance abuse).
• Understand the value of information and the importance of taking additional steps to connect students to community resources.

Plans for Audience Participation and Interaction:
An engaging PowerPoint will be on the screen for the audience to follow along. Knowledge reinforcements will be built into the presentation, creating an atmosphere of information exchange. Direct questions will be asked of the audience to encourage participation during selected intervals and space will be given for participants to share thoughts during and at the conclusion of the workshop.
